Objective:
Determination of the characteristics of the personality profile using the Big Five model in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, taking into account the duration of the disease.
Material And Methods:
An open clinical and psychological study of patients diagnosed with epilepsy (n=47; 33.8±8.7 years; disease duration 15.9±10.2 years) was conducted in comparison with the control group (n=56; 23.3 ±7.7 years). The examination included anamnesis, clinical neurological examination, MRI diagnostics, electroencephalography (EEG), and the Big Five personality test.
Results:
Changes in personality traits are identified in patients with epilepsy: they are characterized by higher rates of Conscientiousness and Emotional stability, but lower values of Openness to experience, compared to the control group. The duration of illness is negatively associated with Extraversion, Agreeableness and Openness to experience.
Conclusion:
The results complement the assessment of the clinical and psychological status of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and indicate an increase in personality changes over the course of drug-resistant epilepsy, which can be used to advise patients about the possible outcomes of the disease during the period of pre-surgical preparation and subsequent rehabilitation.
