    Pre-pubertal anorexia nervosa presents unique challenges. This study found similar illness characteristics and high self-injury rates in pre-pubertal and post-pubertal anorexia nervosa patients.

    • Compares pre-pubertal anorexia nervosa (AN) with post-pubertal AN and pre-pubertal neuroticism.
    • Investigates 20 pre-pubertal AN subjects against matched controls.
    • Examines pre-morbid feeding and behavioral issues in affected children and families.

    Findings:

    • Pre-pubertal AN patients and their families exhibit more pre-morbid feeding problems.
    • Both pre-pubertal groups (AN and neurotic) show increased behavioral issues pre-illness.
    • Anorexia nervosa illness presentation is similar across pre-pubertal and post-pubertal groups, including sexual anxiety and self-injury rates (35%).

    Implications:

    • Findings challenge current etiological theories of anorexia nervosa.
    • Suggests shared underlying mechanisms between early-onset and adolescent-onset AN.
    • Highlights the need for tailored interventions considering developmental factors in pediatric eating disorders.
