    Background:

    • Panic and phobic disorders are associated with anxiety.
    • The role of the sympathetic nervous system in anxiety disorders is not fully understood.
    • Norepinephrine (NE) is a key neurotransmitter involved in the stress response.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate urinary norepinephrine (NE) excretion in patients with panic and phobic disorders.
    • To compare NE levels between panic and phobic disorder patients and healthy controls.
    • To explore the relationship between NE levels and anxiety symptom severity.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed morning urinary norepinephrine (NE) excretion in 36 patients diagnosed with panic or phobic disorders (DSM III).
    • Compared NE levels to a normal control group.
    • Correlated NE levels with anxiety scores from Zung's Anxiety Status Inventory and Wittenborn Psychiatric Rating Scale.

    Main Results:

    • Urinary NE excretion was significantly higher in patients with panic and phobic disorders compared to controls.
