Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

309
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.3K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Psychological Responses to Stress01:20

Psychological Responses to Stress

44
Psychological responses to stress encompass the various cognitive and emotional reactions individuals experience when faced with challenging or threatening situations, such as a job loss. Prolonged exposure to stressors can disturb emotional balance, increasing negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and sadness) and diminishing positive emotions (e.g., joy and satisfaction). These persistent emotional shifts are associated with an increased risk of both physical illness and mental health issues, such...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

38.8K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Physicians exhibit higher suicide rates compared to other professions, with suicide being a leading cause of death among resident physicians.
  • Physicians experiencing mental health crises are less likely to seek or receive treatment than their non-physician counterparts.
  • Physician distress often goes unaddressed due to stigma and lack of accessible resources.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and evaluate a confidential, online, interactive screening program for resident and fellow physicians.
  • To increase mental health awareness among physicians and facilitate early identification of psychological distress.
  • To ultimately reduce the incidence of physician suicide and improve overall well-being.

Main Methods:

  • The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Interactive Screening Program (ISP) was implemented across 155 graduate medical education programs.
  • Trainees were invited to participate in the confidential online self-screening tool.
  • Data were collected on program participation, distress levels, and engagement with personalized recommendations.

Main Results:

  • Over two years, 200 out of 1900 (10.5%) residents and fellows completed the ISP self-screening.
  • A significant majority (98.5%) of those who screened reported moderate to severe psychological distress.
  • Most participants (80.5%) reviewed their personalized mental health recommendations.

Conclusions:

  • The Interactive Screening Program (ISP) effectively identifies psychological distress in physicians.
  • This tool can help bridge the gap in mental health treatment seeking among residents and fellows.
  • Improving access to mental health resources is crucial for physician well-being and suicide prevention.
