A new Egyptian version of the Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) was validated for assessing cognitive function in older adults. This culturally adapted tool accurately identifies cognitive impairment in Egypt, aiding dementia care and research.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience and Gerontology
- Cross-cultural cognitive assessment validation
Background:
- Growing need for culturally sensitive cognitive assessments in Egypt's aging population.
- Existing cognitive assessment tools may not adequately capture cognitive function in diverse cultural contexts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate an adapted Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) for the Egyptian population.
- To integrate the validated Egyptian HCAP into the Egyptian Aging Survey (AL-SEHA) for cognitive health monitoring.
Main Methods:
- Adaptation of the HCAP for Egypt's linguistic and cultural nuances.
- Enrollment of 300 participants aged 55 and above from diverse Egyptian backgrounds.
- Statistical validation of the adapted HCAP for reliability and accuracy.
Main Results:
- The Egyptian HCAP demonstrated strong reliability and validity.
- High accuracy in identifying cognitive impairment: sensitivity 87.6%, specificity 89.2%, overall accuracy 89.7%.
- Successful integration into the AL-SEHA survey.
Conclusions:
- The culturally adapted Egyptian HCAP is a reliable and valid tool for assessing cognitive function in older Egyptians.
- Findings provide crucial data on cognitive decline in Egypt's aging population.
- Establishes a precedent for future cross-cultural HCAP adaptations, informing dementia care policies and early diagnosis.
