Summary

This study found that platelet concentrates can be safely stored using either SSP+ or T-PAS+ platelet additive solutions. Both solutions maintain acceptable platelet quality and storage lesion levels, supporting interchangeability for transfusion preparations.

Background:

  • Platelet additive solutions (PAS) are crucial for ex vivo storage of platelet concentrates.
  • Existing PAS-E solutions have similar but not identical compositions and may involve different plasticizers in storage bags.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of two PAS-E solutions, SSP+ and T-PAS+, for platelet concentrate storage.
  • To determine if SSP+ and T-PAS+ are interchangeable for platelet storage, considering differences in composition and DEHP content.

Main Methods:

  • A pool-and-split design was used to compare platelet concentrates stored in plasma supplemented with SSP+ or T-PAS+.
  • Platelet metabolism was assessed using a blood gas analyzer.
  • Platelet storage lesion was evaluated via flow cytometry, measuring granule release and phosphatidylserine scrambling.

Main Results:

  • Platelet concentrates stored in both SSP+ and T-PAS+ maintained acceptable quality, with pH levels well above the minimal criterion (6.4) throughout storage.
