This study introduces YOLO-OD, an obstacle detection system designed to help visually impaired individuals navigate outdoor environments. The method enhances obstacle detection accuracy, improving safety and independence for users.
Area of Science:
- Computer Vision
- Assistive Technology
- Robotics
Background:
- Visually impaired individuals face significant challenges in detecting and avoiding obstacles during outdoor navigation.
- Existing visual navigation aids often struggle with diverse environmental conditions and varying obstacle sizes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an advanced obstacle detection system (YOLO-OD) for visual navigation assistance tailored for the visually impaired.
- To enhance the detection and differentiation of obstacles, particularly in complex outdoor settings.
Main Methods:
- Introduction of the Feature Weighting Block (FWB) to improve feature importance discrimination for varied obstacle sizes.
- Integration of the Adaptive Bottleneck Block (ABB) to better handle cluttered environments and occlusions.
- Proposal of the Enhanced Feature Attention Head (EFAH) to improve the detection of small obstacles.
Main Results:
- The YOLO-OD system achieved an average precision of 30.02% on a public dataset.
- The proposed enhancements (FWB, ABB, EFAH) contribute to improved obstacle detection capabilities.
Conclusions:
- YOLO-OD presents a promising approach for enhancing navigation aids for the blind and visually impaired.
- The study's findings improve model performance, increasing the practical value of visual navigation assistance.
- Publicly available code ensures research reproducibility and encourages further development in assistive technology.
