Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Product Design
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Foldable smartphones are emerging technology with unique design challenges.
  • Creases on foldable displays significantly impact user experience and product perception.
  • Objective evaluation methods for foldable screen aesthetics are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate user affective (Kansei) evaluation of foldable smartphone creases.
  • To develop a composite measure for assessing crease quality.
  • To establish a predictive model and grading system for foldable display creases.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five participants evaluated 20 foldable smartphone display prototypes with varying multi-crease patterns.
  • Affective dimensions (invisibility, flawlessness, luxuriousness, harmoniousness) were rated on an 11-point scale.
  • Overall goodness was assessed using a 7-point adjective-anchored scale; Principal Component Analysis and regression modeling were employed.

Main Results:

  • A composite measure, Affective Quality Score (AQS), was identified, integrating four affective dimensions.
  • A regression model was developed to predict AQS based on physical crease pattern features.
  • A crease grading system was established to categorize multi-crease patterns by AQS.

Conclusions:

  • The developed regression model and grading system enable prediction and grading of affective quality for foldable smartphone creases.
  • These tools support design goal setting and continuous quality improvement for foldable smartphone products.
  • This research provides a quantitative approach to subjective user evaluations of foldable display aesthetics.
