The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

Area of Science:

  • Dental Education
  • Orthodontics
  • Competency-Based Education

Background:

  • Professional education and assessment rely on competency frameworks.
  • Orthodontic graduates require a diverse set of competencies.
  • Existing frameworks may not fully address the needs of orthodontic graduates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the essential competencies for orthodontic graduates.
  • To develop a foundational competency framework for orthodontic education.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive, cross-sectional study utilizing the Delphi method.
  • Comprehensive literature review across multiple databases and existing curricula.
  • Electronic questionnaires administered to 52 orthodontic specialists in two Delphi rounds.

Main Results:

  • 77 competencies initially identified across 11 domains from 85 articles and 4 curricula.
  • After two Delphi rounds, 73 competencies in 10 domains were accepted.
  • Key accepted domains include data collection, treatment procedures, patient-centered care, dental knowledge, clinical reasoning, communication, health promotion, professionalism, information management, and self-development.

Conclusions:

  • The identified competencies provide a basis for designing competency-based curricula.
  • This framework can inform educational strategies and assessment methods in post-graduate orthodontic programs.
