Preparedness and Phobias01:09

Preparedness and Phobias

434
Human fear responses to certain stimuli, such as darkness, heights, deep water, and blood, can often arise despite the absence of direct negative experiences. This phenomenon is rooted in evolutionary psychology, which posits that humans have developed a predisposition to fear stimuli that historically posed significant survival threats. This predisposition, known as preparedness, suggests that early humans who developed a fear of potentially dangerous entities, such as venomous snakes and...

Standard Precaution01:26

Standard Precaution

3.4K
Standard precautions are the minimum infection control safeguards used while caring for all patients, irrespective of their disease condition. They help prevent the spread of common infectious microorganisms to healthcare workers, patients, and visitors in all healthcare settings.
Hand hygiene is the most crucial means to prevent the transmission of disease. Employers are legally required to provide their workers with personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize exposure or contact with...

Steps in Outbreak Investigation01:18

Steps in Outbreak Investigation

694
In the ever-evolving field of public health, statistical analysis serves as a cornerstone for understanding and managing disease outbreaks. By leveraging various statistical tools, health professionals can predict potential outbreaks, analyze ongoing situations, and devise effective responses to mitigate impact. For that to happen, there are a few possible stages of the analysis:

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

4.9K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Primary Healthcare Services01:30

Primary Healthcare Services

2.7K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.
In 1978, international leaders convened in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, for what would be a pivotal event in global health. The Alma-Ata Declaration was the first to call...

The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.3K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Disaster Management
  • Health Worker Training

Background:

  • Primary Health Care (PHC) staff in Iran manage household disaster preparedness through programs like Disaster Risk Reduction Management Programs (DRRMPs).
  • The Disaster Assessment of Readiness and Training (DART) program is a key initiative for assessing household preparedness.
  • This study evaluates health workers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning household disaster preparedness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health workers regarding household disaster preparedness in Iran.
  • To identify gaps in health worker preparedness within the existing disaster risk reduction framework.
  • To inform policy-making for enhancing disaster preparedness initiatives.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 423 health workers from Isfahan Medical Sciences University in 2023.
  • Utilized the Household Disaster Preparedness Index (HDPI), FEMA questionnaire, and a KAP questionnaire.
  • Data analysis employed Spearman, Chi-square, and Mann Whitney U tests.

Main Results:

  • A low percentage of health workers were classified as "Most Prepared" (2.1% HDPI, 0.9% FEMA).
  • Knowledge showed a negative correlation with attitude (r = -0.366).
  • Significant differences in practices were observed based on home ownership, education, age, and work experience (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Health workers demonstrate insufficient positive attitudes and performance in household emergency preparedness.
  • A systematic approach is required to bolster health workers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices for disaster preparedness (DP).
  • Findings underscore the need for policy development to strengthen DP initiatives within PHC.
