Summary

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) shows significant behavioral differences in children. While neurophysiological markers like event-related potentials (ERPs) were detected, they may not be sufficient for screening ADHD-related processing abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate behavioral and neural differences in executive functions between children with ADHD and healthy controls.
  • To examine the neural substrates of facial affect recognition in ADHD.
  • To evaluate the utility of event-related potentials (ERPs) as diagnostic markers for ADHD.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 117 children with ADHD and 183 healthy controls underwent two Go/NoGo tasks: a visual continuous performance test and an emotional continuous performance test.
  • Behavioral metrics (errors, reaction time, variability) and neurophysiological measures (ERPs, specifically P3d and N170) were analyzed.
  • Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with age and sex as covariates was employed to compare group differences.

Main Results:

  • Significant behavioral differences were observed across all metrics between ADHD patients and controls.
  • Distinct group differences were found in the P3d marker for action inhibition and the N170 marker for facial processing.
