Background:

Depression is common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Numerous clinical and psychosocial factors contribute to depression in COPD.
The link between COPD exacerbations and depression in the Colombian Caribbean remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between the number of COPD exacerbations and depression risk.
To analyze this association in adult outpatients in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional analytical study design was employed.
Data collected included the number of COPD exacerbations (none vs. one or more) and depression risk.
Statistical analysis involved calculating crude and adjusted odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI).

Main Results:

The study included 408 adult COPD patients (mean age 72.9±10.2 years; 58.8% male).
25.9% of patients reported one or more COPD exacerbations, and 27.9% were at risk for depression.
A statistically significant association was found between COPD exacerbations and depression (crude OR=1.80; adjusted OR=1.99).

Conclusions:

The number of COPD exacerbations is associated with depression in outpatients in Santa Marta, Colombia.
Further longitudinal research is recommended to confirm these findings in Colombia.
