Background:

The U.S. is experiencing a significant increase in its older adult population, necessitating a prepared nursing workforce.
Negative attitudes among nursing students toward older adults pose a challenge to providing quality geriatric care.
Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven virtual simulations offer a novel approach to improve nursing education and address attitudinal barriers.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of a three-phased educational intervention, including AI virtual simulation, on nursing students' attitudes toward older adults.
To assess changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to geriatric care.
To explore the potential of AI in enhancing nursing education for an aging population.

Main Methods:

A convergent mixed-method design was employed with 151 nursing students.
Participants completed the UCLA Geriatrics Attitudes Survey and a Guided Reflection survey.
Attitudinal changes were measured pre- and post-intervention using an AI in Education learning event.

Main Results:

A statistically significant increase in positive attitudes toward older adults was observed post-intervention (M = 35.07) compared to pre-intervention (M = 34.50), with p = 0.06.
Qualitative analysis revealed improvements in overcoming ageism, increased empathy and patience, and enhanced communication skills.
The AI intervention demonstrated measurable learning outcomes in nursing students' attitudes.

Conclusions:

AI technology in educational settings can effectively produce measurable improvements in learning outcomes.
Fostering positive attitudes towards older adults is critical for developing competent healthcare professionals.
This study supports the use of AI-driven simulations to prepare nurses for the growing needs of an aging society.
