Alexithymia in Parkinson's Disease: A Meta-analysis

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) show higher alexithymia levels than the general population. This emotional processing difficulty is linked to depression and higher medication doses in PD patients.

- Significant heterogeneity was observed, partially explained by regional differences, higher levodopa equivalent dosage (positive association), and lower cognitive scores (negative association).
- A pooled correlation revealed a significant association between higher alexithymia and depression scores in PD patients (r = 0.496).

- Alexithymia is more prevalent in Parkinson's disease patients than in the general population.
- Higher levels of alexithymia in PD are associated with increased depression and higher daily levodopa equivalent dosage.
- Further research is needed to clarify the role of cognitive status and whether alexithymia is a primary feature of PD.
