Background:

  • Sarcopenia is characterized by age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, increasing fall and disability risks in the elderly.
  • Limited clinical interventions exist for sarcopenia, posing a significant healthcare burden.
  • This study explores electroacupuncture (EA) as a potential treatment for sarcopenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture (EA) in treating elderly patients with sarcopenia.
  • To compare EA treatment with sham electroacupuncture (sEA) in a randomized, sham-controlled trial.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 168 elderly sarcopenia patients were randomized (1:1) to receive either EA or sEA for eight weeks, three times per week.
  • Acupuncture points included LI4, LI10, LI11, LI14, ST32, ST34, ST36, and ST41.
  • Primary outcome was change in grip strength (GS); secondary outcomes included grip strength at weeks 4 and 20, appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score, and physical activity levels (IPAQ).

Main Results:

  • The study is designed to measure changes in grip strength, muscle mass, physical performance, and physical activity levels.
  • Patient expectations, subjective efficacy, and blinding efficacy will also be assessed.

Conclusions:

  • Further results are pending from this randomized controlled trial.
  • The findings will inform the development of novel interventions for sarcopenia.
