Summary

Women undergoing fertility treatments experience psychological distress. Linguistic analysis of their memories reveals that narratives about realizing fertility issues involve more abstract language and less symbolization, suggesting defensive coping mechanisms.

Background:

Infertility diagnosis and treatment cause significant psychological distress and psychopathological symptoms in women.
Understanding the psychological impact is crucial for supporting women through fertility journeys.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate Referential Process (RP) linguistic measures in autobiographical memories of women facing fertility issues.
To explore differences in elaboration and symbolization capabilities based on specific memory types.

Main Methods:

Forty-four women undergoing Assisted Reproduction Treatment (ART) provided semi-structured interviews.
Interviews collected memories of neutral, positive, negative events, and fertility problem realization.
Interview transcriptions were analyzed using Referential Process (RP) linguistic measures with IDAAP software.

Main Results:

Significant differences in RP linguistic measures were found across different autobiographical episodes.
Narratives about realizing fertility issues showed high abstract word use, strong reflection/reorganization, but low symbolization.
This suggests women may use rationalization and emotional distancing as defensive strategies when discussing infertility awareness.

Conclusions:

The findings underscore the importance of addressing women's internal emotional processing during the onset of ART.
Supporting emotional processing can promote both mental and physical well-being in women undergoing fertility treatments.
