Background:

Leadership is crucial in healthcare settings.
Understanding leadership from the practitioner's perspective is vital for effective practice.
Existing leadership theories may not fully capture the nuances of physical therapy leadership.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the lived experience of leadership among outpatient physical therapists.
To determine if these lived experiences align with established leadership theories.

Main Methods:

Qualitative, in-depth, semi-structured interviews.
Conducted with eight outpatient physical therapists in the southeastern USA.
Inductive analysis using in vivo coding, second cycle coding, and theme development.

Main Results:

Three core themes emerged: 'How they lead,' 'Necessary leadership skills,' and 'Rewards of leadership.'
These themes provide a detailed understanding of leadership in practice.
Participant experiences offer practical insights into effective leadership behaviors.

Conclusions:

The lived experiences of outpatient physical therapists are congruent with transformational leadership theory.
Recommends utilizing transformational leadership theory for future research and assessment in physical therapy leadership.
This study is the first to seek perspectives on physical therapy leadership from those experiencing it, impacting future research and development.
