Background:

  • Surgical training programs are associated with high levels of trainee stress and burnout.
  • Formal mentorship programs (FMP) have demonstrated short-term benefits in improving quality of life (QOL).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term impact of a formal mentorship program on the well-being of surgical trainees.
  • To assess sustained effects on stress, burnout, and QOL over 24 months.

Main Methods:

  • A voluntary FMP was implemented in a surgical residency program with 8 participants.
  • Perceived Stress Survey (PSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and WH-QOL were administered at baseline and at multiple follow-up points up to 24 months.

Main Results:

  • PSS and MBI scores for stress and burnout significantly decreased at 12 and 24 months post-FMP implementation (P < .001).
  • World Health Quality of Life-Bref (WH-QOL) scores showed significant improvement at 12 and 24 months (P = .002 and P = .03, respectively).
  • All improvements in stress, burnout, and QOL were sustained throughout the 24-month study period.

Conclusions:

  • Formal mentorship programs provide lasting benefits for surgical trainees' well-being.
  • FMPs effectively mitigate long-term stress and burnout, enhancing overall quality of life in academic surgical training.
