Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary

This study introduces the High Interpersonal Sensitivity Scale (HISS) to measure increased sensitivity to others' emotions in adults with Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS). The scale demonstrates reliable psychometric properties for this important, yet understudied, aspect of SPS.

Background:

Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) is a trait characterized by heightened awareness and emotional reactivity.
Interpersonal sensitivity, a key aspect of SPS, involves heightened sensitivity to others' emotional states.
A validated instrument to measure high interpersonal sensitivity was previously lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate an instrument to assess high interpersonal sensitivity.
To analyze the psychometric properties of the newly developed scale.

Main Methods:

Development of the High Interpersonal Sensitivity Scale (HISS).
Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) were used.
Psychometric properties including internal consistency and validity were assessed in 429 university students.

Main Results:

CFA confirmed a three-factor structure for HISS: awareness of subtleties, overstimulation, and persistent effect.
Internal consistency and validity evidence supported the scale's reliability and congruence with the construct.
The scale demonstrated adequate psychometric properties.

Conclusions:

The High Interpersonal Sensitivity Scale (HISS) is a psychometrically sound instrument for measuring high interpersonal sensitivity in adults.
This scale addresses a gap in the assessment of SPS, specifically its interpersonal dimension.
Further research is recommended to explore the scale's applications and properties in diverse populations.
