Role of Hippocampus in Memory01:19

Role of Hippocampus in Memory

157
The hippocampus, a critical brain structure, plays an essential role in memory processing, particularly in the formation and retrieval of memory. This small, seahorse-shaped region is located within the medial temporal lobe, with one hippocampus in each brain hemisphere. Experimental studies involving lesions in the hippocampi of rats have demonstrated significant impairments in tasks such as object recognition and maze navigation, indicating the hippocampus involvement in both recognition and...

Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

2.5K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

The hippocampus (HC) changes with environmental factors like stress and pollution. Understanding these brain changes is key to boosting cognitive resilience and protecting memory.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Environmental Health

Background:

  • The hippocampus (HC) is vital for learning, memory, and navigation.
  • Environmental factors like stress, noise, and sleep deprivation impact brain structure and function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review how environmental exposures affect the hippocampus.
  • To understand the mechanisms and critical periods of HC vulnerability.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesized findings from animal and human studies.
  • Examined changes in HC volume, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity.
  • Investigated molecular mechanisms like glucocorticoid signaling and epigenetics.

Main Results:

  • Environmental exposures induce structural and functional plasticity in the HC.
  • Specific factors like stress and microgravity alter HC neurogenesis and synaptic function.
  • Critical periods of vulnerability exist for HC development and function.

Conclusions:

  • Hippocampal plasticity is a key response to environmental challenges.
  • Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing interventions.
  • Further research is needed to identify protective factors and enhance cognitive resilience.
