Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of shoulder pain in morbidly obese individuals.
  • To assess shoulder functional performance in this population.
  • To evaluate rotator cuff morphology via ultrasound and inflammatory markers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study comparing 54 morbidly obese patients with 49 controls.
  • Evaluated shoulder pain, functional status (UCLA, DASH scales), rotator cuff ultrasound, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels.
  • Participants were from a bariatric surgery clinic.

Main Results:

  • Morbidly obese patients had a significantly higher incidence of shoulder pain (OR: 17.5) and lower functional performance (UCLA OR: 7.5, DASH p < 0.0001).
  • Ultrasound revealed more rotator cuff pathologies in the obese group (p < 0.0001).
  • Elevated CRP levels were also more common in the obese group (p < 0.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Morbid obesity is a significant risk factor for shoulder pain and reduced shoulder function.
  • Obesity is associated with pathological changes in the rotator cuff and increased systemic inflammation (indicated by CRP).
  • These findings highlight the importance of addressing obesity to improve shoulder health.
