Endoscopic sphincterotomy effectively treated biliary obstruction in 22 patients, including those with gallstones and cancer. This minimally invasive procedure offered excellent results with manageable complications, proving safe for non-surgical biliary care.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Interventional Endoscopy

    Background:

    • Biliary obstruction poses significant health risks.
    • Surgical intervention can be invasive and carry risks.
    • Non-surgical management options are continually being explored.

    Observation:

    • Endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) was performed on 22 patients with biliary obstruction.
    • Causes included choledocholithiasis (19 patients) and malignant distal common bile duct obstruction (3 patients).

    Findings:

    • All 22 patients achieved excellent biliary decompression.
    • Three patients experienced complications, successfully managed with medical treatment.
    • ES demonstrated a high success rate in relieving obstruction.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Endoscopic sphincterotomy is a safe and effective alternative to surgery for biliary obstruction.
    • This procedure offers a less invasive approach for managing gallstones and malignant biliary disease.
    • Further research can explore long-term outcomes and expand indications.
