Intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence professional migration decisions.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations behind migrant nurses' decisions to migrate and relocate to regional areas.
To understand the complex factors influencing healthcare professionals' international and regional mobility.

Main Methods:

A qualitative descriptive study involving semi-structured interviews with 17 migrant nurses in regional Australia.
Thematic analysis of interview data, guided by self-determination theory.
Inclusion criteria focused on recent migration (within 7 years) and nursing qualifications from overseas.

Main Results:

A key theme identified was 'seeking meaningful endeavors,' encompassing professional pride, family duty, and personal satisfaction.
Extrinsic motivators included financial needs, visa security, professional recognition, family unification, and lifestyle.
Intrinsic motivators comprised the desire to practice nursing and explore new environments.

Conclusions:

Migrant nurse motivations are multifaceted, integrating intrinsic and extrinsic elements.
Alignment of extrinsic factors (e.g., family, professional regard) with personal values can foster autonomous motivation.
Intrinsic motivations and supportive work conditions are crucial for enhancing migrant nurse well-being and retention.
