Adaptive insights: dynamic assessment for speech sound intervention in a child with cleft lip and palate

Dynamic assessment (DA) is a new approach to evaluating speech and language disorders, focusing on the learning process over static abilities. It involves a test-teach-retest format and uses the mediated learning experience (MLE) to measure a child's modifiability through intervention efforts. This method is especially relevant for children with cleft lip and palate (CLP). A study on DA in CLP aims to demonstrate its effectiveness in creating personalised intervention plans. The study involved a child with a history of repaired CLP presenting with misarticulation and hypernasality. Over five 45-min sessions of MLE teletherapy with a speech-language pathologist, the child's modifiability across speech errors was observed. The results showed varying levels of modifiability, emphasising the importance of identifying and using a child's learning potential in speech sound production.
