Summary

Hearing aid insurance benefits significantly impact utilization rates. Patients with full or partial coverage were more likely to obtain hearing aids than those with no coverage, indicating cost is a barrier.

Background:

Hearing loss affects millions globally, with hearing aid adoption rates varying significantly.
Insurance coverage for hearing aids is inconsistent, potentially creating disparities in access to treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between hearing aid insurance benefits and hearing aid utilization rates.
To identify the impact of varying insurance coverage levels on patient decisions to acquire hearing aids.

Main Methods:

A retrospective cohort study analyzed 377 patients with hearing loss.
Patients were categorized into full, partial, and no insurance coverage groups.
Hearing aid evaluation and fitting data were reviewed, with statistical analyses including chi-square tests and ANOVA.

Main Results:

Hearing aid utilization was significantly higher in patients with full (78%) and partial (79%) coverage compared to those with no coverage (49%).
No significant differences in audiometric measures (pure tone averages, word recognition scores) were observed across coverage groups.
Out-of-pocket cost appears to be a primary factor influencing hearing aid adoption.

Conclusions:

Financial coverage for hearing aids is a critical determinant of utilization.
Policies that increase insurance benefits for hearing aids could improve adoption rates among individuals with hearing loss.
Addressing the financial barrier is essential for enhancing hearing aid accessibility.
