Contact allergy to Kathon CG, a cosmetic preservative, is reported in three patients. This marks the first non-occupational sensitization cases to this widely used ingredient.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Cosmetic Science
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Kathon CG, a preservative blend of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one, is widely used in cosmetics and toiletries.
    • Despite extensive use in Europe and the USA for several years, data on non-occupational sensitization is limited.

    Observation:

    • Three cases of contact allergy to Kathon CG are presented.
    • Two patients developed allergic reactions after using a moisturizing cream containing Kathon CG.
    • One patient was sensitized through a diagnostic patch test.

    Findings:

    • These cases represent the first reported instances of non-occupational contact allergy to Kathon CG.
    • The findings highlight the potential for sensitization from topical exposure to this preservative.

    Implications:

    • Healthcare professionals should consider Kathon CG as a potential allergen in patients with cosmetic-related dermatitis.
    • Further research into the sensitization potential and safe usage levels of Kathon CG in consumer products is warranted.
    • Dermatologists and allergists should be aware of these findings when diagnosing and managing contact dermatitis cases.
