    Area of Science:

    • Photonics
    • Quantum Technologies
    • Nonlinear Optics

    Background:

    • Optical nonreciprocal devices are essential for integrated photonics and quantum technologies.
    • Existing devices often face challenges with dynamic reciprocity and integration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and demonstrate an all-optical approach for achieving integrated optical nonreciprocity.
    • To overcome the dynamic reciprocity challenge in optical devices.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizing a moving index grating generated in a nonlinear optical waveguide via the Kerr effect.
    • Employing two counter-propagating pump fields with slightly different frequencies to create the grating.
    • Demonstrating nonreciprocal transmission and reflection of signal fields.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved near-unity isolation contrast in an all-optical isolator.
    • Demonstrated negligible insertion loss.
    • Successfully addressed the dynamic reciprocity challenge.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed moving index grating offers a novel and versatile method for integrated all-optical nonreciprocal devices.
    • This approach paves the way for advanced integrated photonic circuits and scalable quantum technologies.
