Summary

A lower count of Langerhans cells (LCs), identified by CD1a expression, is linked to poorer outcomes in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). This suggests LCs may be a key prognostic factor for TSCC patients.

Background:

  • Tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is a prevalent oral cancer with stagnant survival rates.
  • Langerhans cells (LCs) are crucial for antitumor immunity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between Langerhans cell (LC) density and disease prognosis in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC).
  • To determine if CD1a immune expression can serve as a prognostic biomarker for TSCC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathologic analysis of 24 TSCC cases and 12 normal tissue controls.
  • Immunohistochemical staining using the CD1a marker to quantify LC density.
  • Statistical analysis to assess the impact of CD1a+ cell counts on patient survival and clinicopathological variables.

  • Further research into LC-based biomarkers could improve TSCC patient management.
