Double Resonance Techniques: Overview01:12

Double Resonance Techniques: Overview

Double resonance techniques in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy involve the simultaneous application of two different frequencies or radiofrequency pulses to manipulate and observe two distinct nuclear spins. One important application of double resonance is spin decoupling, which selectively suppresses coupling with one type of nucleus while observing the NMR signal from another nucleus, simplifying the spectrum and enhancing resolution.
Spin decoupling is usually achieved by...
Differential Staining Technique01:26

Differential Staining Technique

Differential staining is an essential microbiological technique that exploits variations in cell wall structures to classify and identify microorganisms. It facilitates the distinction of bacteria, aiding in diagnostic and research applications. Two of the most widely used differential staining methods are Gram staining and acid-fast staining, both of which rely on the chemical and structural differences in bacterial cell walls.Gram Staining TechniqueGram staining differentiates bacteria by...

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Congenital Deformities

Background:

  • The question mark ear is a rare external auricular deformity.
  • It is characterized by a cleft between the helix and earlobe and upper auricle broadening.
  • Limited guidance exists for managing this condition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a hybrid surgical technique for correcting question mark ear deformities.
  • To restore the natural appearance and dimensions of the auricle.

Main Methods:

  • A hybrid technique involving antihelix reformation, scapha reduction, and helical rim flap advancement was employed.
  • Preoperative and postoperative auricular measurements were taken.
  • Fourteen patients (11 unilateral, 3 bilateral) aged 5-23 years were treated.

Main Results:

  • Postoperative auricular width showed no significant difference compared to the contralateral side.
  • Significant enhancement in overall auricular configuration and cleft repair was observed.
  • The vertical mattress suture technique successfully reformed the antihelix appearance.

Conclusions:

  • The hybrid technique is effective for correcting question mark ear deformities with good aesthetic results.
  • Scapha reduction and helical rim flap advancement successfully addressed the cleft.
  • The technique restores a natural auricular appearance.
