Computed Tomography01:10

Computed Tomography

4.2K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Scanning Electron Microscopy01:07

Scanning Electron Microscopy

4.1K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Technology
  • Digital Dentistry
  • Optical Imaging

Background:

  • Scanning technology is revolutionizing dentistry, shifting from traditional impressions to digital methods.
  • Intraoral scanners (IOS) offer advanced optical impressions for various dental applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the development, current status, and future impact of scanning technology in dentistry.
  • To assess the diagnostic effectiveness of intraoral scanning for various oral diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of the past ten years from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases.
  • Search terms: "intraoral scanner" AND "diagnosis*" OR "Dental Scanners."
  • Inclusion of original studies and human trials; meta-regression and subgroup analyses for heterogeneity.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-eight papers were analyzed, covering imaging principles of various dental scanners (e.g., iTero Element, TRIOS 3, CEREC Omnicam).
  • The review details primary conclusions, oral diseases identified using IOS, and the role of IOS as an oral diagnostic tool.
  • Intraoral scanning demonstrates significant diagnostic effectiveness across a range of oral disorders.

Conclusions:

  • Intraoral scanning technology is a valuable resource for dental professionals and academics during the digital transformation of dentistry.
  • IOS enhances the understanding and diagnosis of oral diseases, offering revolutionary effects and future applications.
  • The review provides insights into the diagnostic capabilities and evolving landscape of dental scanning technologies.
