We developed a new ion bunching ionizer for time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) that significantly improves ion utilization efficiency. This novel device enhances sensitivity by an order of magnitude, enabling resource-efficient portable mass spectrometry.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Mass Spectrometry Instrumentation
Background:
- Time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOF-MS) require controlled ion beams for operation.
- Conventional pulsed voltage methods offer simplicity but suboptimal ion utilization efficiency.
- Unbunched ions generated during TOF separation are typically unusable, limiting sensitivity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and develop a novel ion bunching ionizer with enhanced ion utilization.
- To achieve higher sensitivity in mass spectrometry through efficient ion management.
- To create a resource-efficient ionizer suitable for portable mass spectrometers.
Main Methods:
- Employed analytical and numerical methods to design the bunching ionizer based on electrostatic ion beam trap principles.
- Utilized gas samples and electron impact ionization for experimental testing.
- Integrated the developed bunching ionizer with a miniature TOF-MS for performance evaluation.
Main Results:
- Demonstrated effective ion bunching performance, correlating with sample gas density and ion bunching time.
- Achieved a tenfold increase in sensitivity compared to non-bunching ionizers in TOF-MS experiments.
- The new ionizer operates effectively with low voltage and minimal power consumption.
Conclusions:
- The developed bunching ionizer significantly enhances ion utilization and mass spectrometer sensitivity.
- The low power and resource requirements make this technology suitable for portable mass spectrometry applications.
- This advancement offers a pathway to more sensitive and accessible analytical instrumentation.
