Abstract:
This review elucidates the roles of vitrification and blastocyst culture in assisted reproductive technology. Vitrification exploits ultra-fast cooling rates to preserve embryos and avoid cell-damaging ice crystals. With the cultivation of the embryo to the blastocyst stage, survival- and pregnancy rates are now comparable to those achieved with fresh embryos. This has provided numerous advantages, and this review will focus on the management of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, the use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone-agonist trigger, elective single embryo transfer, and preimplantation genetic testing.
