Barriers to Effective Communication II

3.6K
The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:

The case management model is a multidisciplinary approach that involves healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, working collaboratively to address the various needs of patients. Each healthcare professional brings unique expertise and perspectives, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and tailoring treatment plans accordingly.
For example, a patient with a chronic...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Barriers to Effective Communication I

8.7K
A communication barrier is any distortion or interruption during a conversation, resulting in miscommunication of the message. A good communicator should know these barriers and continuously check for the listener's understanding by obtaining feedback.
Communication barriers include the following:
Physiological barriers: They are limitations caused by a person's health condition or disability, such as hearing loss, poor eyesight, illness, or unconsciousness. An example to overcome this...

Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Telemedicine
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Patients with non-English language preference (NELP) use video visits less frequently than English-speaking patients.
  • Understanding NELP patients' capabilities, opportunities, and motivation is crucial for optimizing video visit utilization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate facilitators and barriers influencing video visit adoption among patients with NELP.
  • To identify factors that can enhance video visit accessibility and engagement for diverse linguistic groups.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews with Spanish- and Cantonese-speaking patients with no prior video visit history.
  • Interviews conducted via telephone, audio-recorded, transcribed, translated, and analyzed using rapid qualitative analysis.
  • Themes identified and mapped to the capability, opportunity, and motivation model.

Main Results:

  • Four major themes emerged: communication challenges, perceived drawbacks and benefits for medical evaluations, technical/access barriers (digital literacy, device/data access), and facilitators (in-person teaching, simpler processes, practice, support, language-concordant interactions).
  • Some participants were deterred by disadvantages, while others found benefits counterbalanced by convenience.
  • Key barriers included communication difficulties, perceived lower quality of medical evaluation, and technical issues.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with NELP perceive significant barriers to video visits, including communication and technical challenges.
  • Addressing these addressable technical and linguistic challenges is essential to improve video visit access and motivation.
  • Interventions are necessary to promote telehealth equity for patients with language barriers.
