Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

43
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

56
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Ryan and Deci's Self-Determination Theory

10.3K
Self-Determination Theory (SDT), formulated by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, explains that human motivation is driven by three fundamental psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met, individuals experience personal growth, intrinsic motivation, and overall well-being.
Autonomy is the need to feel in control of one's actions and decisions. For example, a student who chooses their research topic is likely to be more engaged and motivated than one who...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Psychology
  • Social Sciences

Background:

  • Self-determination support is crucial for young adults with autism.
  • Existing support in Spain inadequately addresses these needs.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impacts self-determination skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness, implementation, and acceptability of a novel self-determination support program for young adults with autism in Spain.
  • To provide empirical evidence for interventions promoting self-determination in this population.
  • To address the gap in self-determination support for autistic individuals in Spain.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter, mixed-methods randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving 40 young adults with autism (17-30 years).
  • Intervention and waiting-list groups were compared using quantitative (e.g., SDI:SR) and qualitative (focus groups) data.
  • Data collected at baseline, during, and post-intervention; results integrated using joint displays.

Main Results:

  • No significant quantitative differences between groups, but participants and caregivers reported positive impacts on agentic actions and overall self-determination.
  • Qualitative findings provided deeper insights, identifying personal/contextual barriers and facilitators.
  • High implementation fidelity and program acceptability were observed; group format was beneficial.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides initial empirical evidence for a self-determination intervention for autistic young adults in Spain.
  • Qualitative data enriched understanding of quantitative outcomes and highlighted areas for program improvement.
  • Further research is necessary to optimize and validate this intervention for broader application.
