Children with sleep-disordered breathing show impaired memory function. Better sleep stability, measured by cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC), is linked to improved memory recall and recognition in these children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Sleep Medicine
- Neuroscience
- Respiratory Medicine
Background:
- Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is prevalent in children and can impact cognitive functions.
- Memory deficits are a concern in children with SDB, but the underlying sleep mechanisms are not fully understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between sleep quality and stability, assessed using cardiopulmonary coupling (CPC), and memory function in children with SDB.
Main Methods:
- 152 children (5-12 years) with suspected SDB underwent polysomnography (PSG) and CPC analysis.
- Memory was tested using immediate and delayed recall and recognition tasks.
- Sleep quality index (SQI) and high frequency coupling (HFC) for sleep stability were calculated.
Main Results:
- Higher sleep stability (HFC%) correlated positively with delayed recall and recognition consolidation.
- Lower sleep stability (LFC%) correlated negatively with delayed recall, delayed recognition, and recognition consolidation.
- Sleep apnea indicator (SAI) negatively correlated with recognition consolidation.
Conclusions:
- Sleep stability, assessed via CPC, may serve as a risk biomarker for memory function in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- These findings highlight the importance of sleep stability in cognitive development for children with SDB.
