    Background:

    • Minor cranial traumas represent 4% of neurological admissions.
    • Evaluating 226 consecutive cases of minor head trauma.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Define clinical characteristics of patients with minor head trauma.
    • Establish the priority of instrumental investigations for diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Clinical examination
    • Skull X-rays
    • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis
    • Electroencephalography (EEG)
    • Computed tomography (CT) scan
    • Isotopic cisternography

    Main Results:

    • Skull X-rays are not predictive of CSF hemorrhage or brain contusion.
    • CSF was bloody in 1/3 of asymptomatic cases and 1/6 of cases without fracture.
    • EEG indicated brain contusion in cases without CT evidence.
    • CT scans are superior for diagnosing small subdural hematomas.

    Conclusions:

    • Clinical and laboratory findings correlate with diagnostic priorities.
    • CT is essential for detecting small subdural hematomas.
    • EEG may reveal contusions not evident on CT.
