Vaccination coverage in Mexican adults remains low, with significant decreases in tetanus and measles vaccines between 2012 and 2021-2023. Many adults lack protection against preventable diseases.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Vaccinology

Context:

  • Analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey Continuous 2021-2023 (Ensanut Continua 2021-2023) in Mexico.
  • Comparison with data from the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut 2012).

Purpose:

  • To estimate the proportion of vaccinated adults and older adults in Mexico.
  • To identify factors associated with vaccination status.
  • To analyze changes in vaccination coverage over time.

Summary:

  • Vaccination status was self-reported due to low accreditation rates (6.8% in 2021-2023 vs. 17.7% in 2012).
  • Coverage for tetanus, measles-rubella, influenza, and pneumococcal vaccines decreased or showed limited increase between 2012 and 2021-2023 in adults aged 20-59 and older adults.

Related Experiment Videos

  • COVID-19 vaccine coverage was high (86.6% and 89.2% for young and older adults, respectively).
  • Incomplete vaccination schemes were associated with being male, lacking social security, and having paid work in adults aged 20-59, and with lacking social security in older adults.
  • Impact:

    • A significant proportion of Mexican adults and older adults are not protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.
    • Findings highlight the need for improved vaccination strategies and public health interventions.
    • The study underscores disparities in healthcare access and vaccination uptake.
