Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Robotics
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Background:

  • Robotic-assisted surgery adoption is rising globally.
  • A new modular robotic system is now approved for human use in Europe.
  • Standardized approaches for novel robotic systems are under development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a standardized setup for upper gastrointestinal procedures using a new modular robotic system.
  • To demonstrate the feasibility and safety of a robotic-assisted gastric wedge resection.
  • To detail the surgical steps, instrumentations, and system setup for reproducibility.

Main Methods:

  • A 69-year-old patient with a gastric tumor underwent robotic-assisted gastric wedge resection.
  • Detailed description of trocar positioning, robotic arm adjustments, and instrument selection.
  • Standardized protocol for upper gastrointestinal procedures using the new modular robotic system.

Main Results:

  • The robotic gastric wedge resection was successfully completed.
  • The procedure involved a docking time of 13 minutes and a console time of 115 minutes.
  • The patient experienced an uneventful recovery and was discharged after 4 days.

Conclusions:

  • The presented robotic-assisted gastric wedge resection is safe and feasible.
  • The standardized approach is reproducible and suitable for other upper gastrointestinal surgeries like fundoplications and hiatoplasties.
  • This modular robotic system offers a versatile platform for advanced gastrointestinal procedures.
