    Background:

    • Limited research exists on rubella epidemiology in India.
    • Previous studies focused on female populations and pregnant women, assessing rubella antibodies and congenital malformations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the seroepidemiology of rubella in India.
    • To assess the risk of prenatal rubella infection and its link to congenital malformations.
    • To evaluate rubella serosurveillance in pregnant women.

    Main Methods:

    • Seroepidemiologic surveys using the hemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) test to detect rubella antibodies.
    • Serosurveillance of pregnant women in Delhi and Lucknow.
    • Retrospective studies of infants with congenital malformations.

    Main Results:

    • Over 80% of women of childbearing age in northern India had rubella antibodies, compared to 56.8% in Calcutta.

    Conclusions:

    • Further studies and surveillance are needed across India to understand rubella's impact.
