Application of Linearization and Approximation

A drone flying through complex terrain often relies on more than one sensing method to estimate small changes in altitude. Along with direct measurements, air pressure provides a useful indirect indicator of vertical movement. Atmospheric pressure decreases as altitude increases, and this relationship is commonly described using an exponential model. Although accurate, converting pressure measurements into altitude values requires calculations that are too complex to perform repeatedly during...

Area of Science:

  • Geodesy and Geomatics
  • Satellite Navigation Systems

Background:

  • Precise Point Positioning-Ambiguity Resolution (PPP-AR) relies on accurate estimation of wide-lane (WL) and narrow-lane (NL) uncalibrated phase delays (UPDs).
  • Traditional methods for NL UPD estimation use ionosphere-free ambiguities, which are treated as constants, leading to UPDs influenced by historical data and obscuring real-time variations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a real-time NL UPD estimation method for PPP-AR using a sliding time window.
  • To improve the accuracy of NL UPDs and enhance the performance of PPP-AR.

Main Methods:

  • A novel real-time NL UPD estimation method based on a sliding time window was proposed and implemented.
  • The method was applied during the PPP calculation at reference stations for UPD estimation.
  • Rigorous experimental comparisons were conducted to evaluate the reliability of the new approach.

Main Results:

  • The proposed sliding window method yields NL UPDs that more accurately represent the true values at the current epoch compared to traditional methods.
  • Significant improvements were observed in the successful fixing rate of PPP-AR.
  • The average Time-To-First-Fix (TTFF) and the correct fixing rate of PPP-AR were notably enhanced.

Conclusions:

  • The real-time NL UPD estimation method using a sliding window effectively captures the dynamic characteristics of UPDs.
  • This enhanced UPD estimation significantly boosts the overall performance and reliability of PPP-AR systems.
