Background:

Cardiac telemetry is a critical but resource-intensive aspect of inpatient care.
Current practices may not align with established guidelines, leading to overuse.
Understanding provider knowledge gaps is essential for optimizing telemetry use.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the knowledge and application of American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for cardiac telemetry among hospital staff.
To identify disparities in understanding and practice between nurses and physicians.
To inform the development of targeted educational interventions.

Main Methods:

A survey was administered to 73 physicians and 64 nurses at an academic teaching hospital.
The survey included questions on guideline knowledge and hypothetical patient scenarios to assess application.
Statistical analysis, including chi-square tests, was used to compare responses.

Main Results:

Nurses reported greater comfort with AHA guidelines, while physicians felt more confident discontinuing telemetry.
A significant majority of physicians (81%) believed telemetry was overused, compared to 48% of nurses.
Discrepancies were noted in guideline adherence and telemetry application in non-indicated scenarios.

Conclusions:

Significant differences exist in the knowledge and attitudes regarding cardiac telemetry utilization among nurses and physicians.
Attending physicians demonstrated better understanding and application of guidelines than residents.
An educational initiative focusing on AHA telemetry guidelines is recommended to improve clinical practice.
