Summary

Brushing motion in root canal preparation did not cause microcracks with any of the tested file systems. Multi-file rotary, single-file rotary, and single-file reciprocation systems did not induce microcracks.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of brushing motion on microcrack formation in round distal canals.
  • To compare microcrack formation using multi-file rotary (MFR), single-file rotary (SFR), and single-file reciprocation (SFRc) systems.
  • To assess the influence of pecking versus brushing motions on microcracks.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-six mandibular molars were prepared using MFR (ProTaper Next), SFR (TruNatomy), or SFRc (WaveOne Gold) systems.
  • Samples were divided into pecking (P) and brushing (B) motion groups (n=12).
  • Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was used for pre- and post-instrumentation scans to detect microcracks.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in microcrack formation were observed between pre- and post-instrumentation scans for any group.
  • Post-instrumentation microcrack incidence was not significantly different between pecking and brushing motions within each file system group.
  • None of the tested file systems (MFR, SFR, SFRc) showed a significant difference in microcrack formation when using pecking or brushing motions.

Conclusions:

  • Brushing motion, when used after pecking motion, did not induce microcracks in round distal canals.
  • The evaluated file systems (ProTaper Next, TruNatomy, WaveOne Gold) did not induce microcracks during root canal preparation.
  • The findings suggest that current endodontic file systems and preparation techniques are safe regarding microcrack induction.
