    Area of Science:

    • Addiction research
    • Behavioral psychology
    • Public health

    Background:

    • Smoking relapse is a significant challenge in smoking cessation.
    • Understanding the situational and emotional triggers of relapse is crucial for effective interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a typology of smoking relapse episodes.
    • To identify distinct patterns and categories of relapse or near-relapse situations.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected descriptions of relapse/near-relapse episodes from 183 ex-smokers.
    • Utilized cluster analysis on 53 detailed cases to identify distinct groups.

    Main Results:

    • Identified five clusters of relapse episodes, grouped into Type I (positive affect) and Type II (negative affect).
    • Type Ia (drinking with smokers) showed less coping and more relapse.
    • Other types included relaxation (Ib), withdrawal (Ic), work stress anxiety (IIa), and boredom/inactivity (IIb).

    Conclusions:

    • A typology of smoking relapse episodes can be established using cluster analysis.
    • Different relapse situations have varying associations with affective tone and coping strategies.
    • Findings can inform tailored interventions to prevent smoking relapse.
