Immediate Autologous Breast Reconstruction in a Patient With Achondroplasia

Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant condition resulting in skeletal dysplasia and abnormal endochondral bone formation. Many clinical features, including short stature, macroglossia, midface retrusion, and restrictive lung disease, may pose anesthetic and surgical risks. We present a case of a 36-year-old female with right inflammatory breast cancer who underwent immediate autologous breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap complicated by hypoxic respiratory failure. We review the literature on this topic and associated preoperative and postoperative challenges that may occur in this patient population.
