Two novel heterocyclic compounds were isolated from Polygonum tinctorium leaves. These compounds, along with known alkaloids, were tested for their potential to inhibit alpha-glycosidase and acetylcholinesterase enzymes.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Natural Products
Background:
- Polygonum tinctorium Ait. (Liao da qing ye) is a traditional Chinese medicine.
- Its leaves are a common source of bioactive compounds.
- Previous phytochemical studies have explored its constituents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel heterocyclic compounds from Polygonum tinctorium.
- To investigate the phytochemical profile of the plant's leaves.
- To evaluate the inhibitory potential of isolated compounds against alpha-glycosidase and acetylcholinesterase.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation of Polygonum tinctorium leaves.
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structural elucidation via High-Resolution Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (HRESIMS) and spectroscopic analysis.
- Enzyme inhibition assays against alpha-glycosidase and acetylcholinesterase.
Main Results:
- Two novel heterocyclic compounds (1 and 2) were identified.
- Four known pyrrolidine alkaloids were also isolated.
- Compound 1 features a furan-based core; compound 2 has a pyrrole-based framework.
- The isolated compounds were screened for enzyme inhibitory activity.
Conclusions:
- Polygonum tinctorium leaves contain novel heterocyclic compounds with potential bioactivity.
- The study contributes to understanding the phytochemical diversity of this medicinal herb.
- Further research may explore therapeutic applications based on enzyme inhibition profiles.
