    Summary

    Total hip replacements following failed surface replacements show excellent outcomes. Previous hip surface replacement surgery does not negatively impact the success of subsequent total hip replacement procedures.

    Background:

    • Surface replacement of the hip is a surgical procedure for hip joint disease.
    • Failures of hip surface replacements can necessitate revision surgery.
    • The impact of prior surface replacement on total hip replacement outcomes is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of total hip replacement (THR) after failure of hip surface replacement (SR).
    • To determine if a prior SR procedure affects the success of a subsequent THR.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of 12 patients who underwent 13 THR revisions after SR failure.
    • Follow-up duration averaged 3 years.
    • Complications and functional outcomes were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • No complications were reported in any of the revision THR cases.
    • All patients achieved results with THR that were equal to or better than their prior SR.
    • Functional outcomes were satisfactory following revision surgery.

    Conclusions:

    • Total hip replacement is a viable and successful option after hip surface replacement failure.
    • Previous hip surface replacement does not appear to compromise the results of subsequent total hip replacement.
    • This study suggests that SR failure should not deter surgeons from proceeding with THR.
