Background:

The traditional, goal-oriented curriculum for Anesthesia Technology in Iran contrasts with the dominant competency-based approach used globally in healthcare.
There is a recognized need to establish essential competencies for Anesthesia Technologists to enhance their professional capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the required educational competencies for undergraduate Anesthesia Technology students in Iran.
To lay the groundwork for a shift from a traditional curriculum to a competency-based model.

Main Methods:

A quantitative developmental study was conducted, involving literature reviews and expert consensus.
A questionnaire was developed, validated (CVR, CVI), and tested for reliability (ICC, Cronbach's alpha) with anesthesia experts.

Main Results:

Sixty-one competencies were identified and categorized into five domains: ethics, collaboration, evidence-based practice, safety, and technical skills.
The developed questionnaire demonstrated high validity and reliability, with an ICC of 0.997 and Cronbach's alpha of 0.992.

Conclusions:

The development of a competency framework is a feasible and critical first step towards implementing a competency-based curriculum for Anesthesia Technology.
This study provides a validated competency framework, essential for advancing anesthesia technology education in Iran.
