Area of Science:

  • Linguistics
  • Psychology
  • Special Education

Background:

  • Intellectual disabilities present significant challenges in language acquisition, development, and use.
  • Pragmatic language skills are crucial for interpersonal relationships, self-expression, and context-dependent communication.
  • Effective communication relies on the harmonious integration of complex cognitive functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review assessment tools for pragmatic competence in individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • To identify existing instruments and evaluate their suitability for this population.
  • To highlight the need for improved assessment methods to support social inclusion.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searched for articles on pragmatic competence assessment in intellectual disabilities.
  • Included 20 articles from an initial pool of 172 for final review.

Main Results:

  • A significant lack of conformity exists between different assessment instruments regarding evaluated pragmatic aspects.
  • Existing evaluation tools are not adequately adjusted to the specific characteristics of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • There is a notable gap in standardized assessments tailored to the pragmatic communication needs of this population.

Conclusions:

  • The development of new, standardized tests specifically designed for the pragmatic skills of people with intellectual disabilities is urgently required.
  • Tailored assessment is essential for creating comprehensive communication profiles.
  • Individualized intervention and support programs depend on accurate and appropriate assessment tools.
