Bones of the Lower Limb: Femur and Patella01:16

Bones of the Lower Limb: Femur and Patella

2.0K
The femur is the body's longest and strongest bone spanning the thigh region. Its head articulates with the acetabulum of the hip bone to form the hip joint. A minor indentation on the medial side of the femoral head, called the fovea capitis, serves as the site of attachment for the ligament of the head of the femur. This weak ligament spans the femur and acetabulum and supports the hip joint. The narrowed region below the head is the neck of the femur. The inclination angle between the...

Muscles of the Pelvic Floor and Perineum01:26

Muscles of the Pelvic Floor and Perineum

844
The muscles of the pelvic floor and perineum are crucial for supporting the pelvic organs, controlling continence, and aiding in sexual function, childbirth, and core stability. They are typically divided into the superficial perineal layer and the deep pelvic floor layer.
Perineal Layer
The perineum is a diamond-shaped area below the pelvic diaphragm, divided into an anterior urogenital triangle that contains the external genitals and a posterior anal triangle housing the anus. The urogenital...

External Female Genitals01:15

External Female Genitals

2.0K
The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more...

Spinal Nerves: Plexus II

366
The plexuses of the lower body include the lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal plexuses, which innervate the abdomen, pelvis, legs, and coccygeal region. These plexuses control the transmission of sensory information and coordinate motor functions of the lower body.
The Lumbar Plexus
The lumbar plexus is situated within the lumbar region of the back and is primarily formed by the first four lumbar spinal nerves (L1 to L4). This plexus extends its branches into several nerves, including the...

Muscles of the Abdomen01:21

Muscles of the Abdomen

814
The abdominal wall encircles the abdominal cavity, providing flexible protection and shielding the internal organs from harm. It is bordered at the top by the xiphoid process and costal margins, at the back by the vertebral column, and at the bottom by the pelvic bones and inguinal ligament. The abdominal wall is divided into two regions — the anterolateral and posterior regions.
Anterolateral Region
The anterolateral region comprises five paired muscles classified into the lateral and...

Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

1.3K
The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris...

Summary

Kerion of the pubis, a rare deep fungal infection, was diagnosed in three patients due to Microsporum canis. Prompt identification and treatment with griseofulvin are crucial for managing this pubic area infection.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Kerion of the pubis is an uncommon deep dermatophyte infection.
  • It typically presents with systemic symptoms and rarely affects the genital area.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report three new cases of kerion of the pubis.
  • To highlight the association with Microsporum canis infection.

Main Methods:

  • Direct microscopic examination using potassium hydroxide solution.
  • Fungal culture on Sabouraud agar for Microsporum canis isolation.
  • Identification using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

Main Results:

  • All three cases were secondary to Microsporum canis.
  • Microsporum canis exhibited characteristic yellow to orange colonies.
  • Hyaline septate hyphae and arthroconidia were observed on direct examination.

Conclusions:

  • Clinicians should suspect deep fungal infections in pubic area lesions.
  • High index of suspicion is needed for suppurative or folliculitis-like lesions.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment, such as with griseofulvin, are important.
