A pharmacogenomics patient case repository was created for pharmacy education, offering 44 cases across 9 therapeutic areas. This resource, developed by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group (PGx SIG), is freely accessible online.
Area of Science:
- Pharmacogenomics
- Pharmacy Education
- Medical Informatics
Background:
- The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group (PGx SIG) identified a need for accessible educational pharmacogenomics (PGx) case studies.
- Existing resources were insufficient for comprehensive PGx education in pharmacy programs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the development of a curated, shared repository of PGx cases for pharmacy educators.
- To highlight the lessons learned during the creation of this educational resource.
Main Methods:
- An ad-hoc committee developed a standardized case framework based on the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process.
- A guidance document for case authors was created.
- The repository was established on a shared online platform.
Main Results:
- A total of 44 PGx cases were accepted and categorized by difficulty (introductory, intermediate, advanced).
- The cases cover 9 therapeutic areas and are freely available via AACP Connect.
- The repository has seen 427 downloads over the past 36 months.
Conclusions:
- The AACP PGx SIG successfully created a valuable educational PGx case repository using a standardized framework.
- This model can be adopted by other academic groups for developing similar case repositories.
- Future research will assess the impact of this resource on academic outcomes.
